THE STORY BEHIND THE SHOT

Here’s one that almost didn’t happen.

This shot was made on a beautiful February afternoon in California. It ended up as the lead photo in a feature on Rich Sutliffe’s 1973 911S race car.

I enlisted Cris Huergas to drive my VW Eurovan as the “camera car” near Oakland, while I hung out the side door with a super wide angle lens, creating a distorted effect of speed.

Cris called that day to say he was babysitting his grandson. The solution… bring Bubba and the baby seat, and strap them both down in the secure passenger seat! All went well, and the white van reflected the perfect amount of light into the Porsche for this backlit photo in motion.
