VACATION

Vacation. From the Latin word vacatio, meaning freedom or exemption. A restful respite. A period of exemption from the world. A soulfully fulfilling experience of freedom.

An island in Washington state’s South Puget Sound holds a recluse that my wife and I can escape to for a couple of days every month. Once or twice a year we spend two or more weeks at a time there.

Just back from one of those longer stays – a much needed one. On this secluded waterfront property sits a small log cabin among 100 year-old trees just above a long sandy beach where I keep our 9 foot Livingston skiff with 15hp motor. Also have a sailboat there, a Hobie 14 I’ve owned since 1975. My vacation is becoming something of a distant memory far too quickly – one that feels achingly familiar.

I know what heaven is, and I want to go back.

Love this raucous video from France. Gotta get back in shape and start sailing my catamaran again:
