Steinbeck’s America: In Search of Travels with Charley
* An Analog Photo Book Based on a 50,000-mile USA Road Trip at the End of the 20th Century *
A Photo Book by Randy Wells
Randy Wells was so inspired by John Steinbeck’s 1962 book, Travels With Charley: In Search of America, that he felt compelled to document his own journey on analog film while traveling across America at the end of the 20th century.
Over a seven year period, from 1992-1999, before cell phones, digital cameras, drones or GPS, he drove a VW van along Steinbeck’s route using maps to photograph the entire project on Fujichrome transparency slide film. The resulting book with over a hundred un-manipulated analog images, combined with Randy’s text, express his interpretation of Travels With Charley and the USA before 9/11.
