UTAH VOTES $5 MILLION TO RESTORE BONNEVILLE SALT FLATS

Just in from SaveTheSalt.org:

“This marks the first public dollars appropriated to restore the depleted salt surface since the land speed racing community began its quest more than 30 year ago,” said Save the Salt Foundation Vice Chairman Tom Burkland. “This is a job well done. Land speed racers the world over say, ‘Thank You Utah!’”

BONNEVILLE SPEED WEEK 2018

I’ve just returned from a trip to Utah’s Bonneville Speedway where I filmed Tom Woodford attempting a record breaking run in his 3-liter dual MFI turbo powered 1975 911 on the salt flats.

He’s now in the 175 MPH Club with 180 & 192 MPH times!

It was a great week hanging out with Tom and the crew, including Walt Walters – plus my good friend, “the original outlaw”, Gary Emory.

Look for more photos and a film in the future.

SAVE THE SALT IS WORKING

As Speed Week at the Bonneville Salt Flats celebrates its 68th anniversary, three organizations representing racers and industry are in discussions with a potash mine operator on ways to increase the amount of brine being pumped back into the salt flats. This 10-year pilot program promises to end the depletion of the top layer at this historic racing site, which I reported on earlier.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHOT

Summer’s here and it’s time for a blistering image that has an interesting back story.

Bonneville Salt Flats is ground zero for land speed records. It’s also a cooker in the summer. The white surface acts like a huge reflector that throws light everywhere. This portrait is one example.

I had set up a flash to camera right and was ready to set my exposure. I fired a test shot, but it was way overexposed at 1/13 of a second. More

SEARCHING FOR SALT – ONE YEAR LATER

Thanks to my friends at Road Scholars for publishing an update to my October 2015 award-winning article.

Road Scholars Magazine

It tells the story of Porsche competitor Tom Woodford, who attended the 2014 Bonneville Salt Flats “World of Speed” event. It was the only automotive competition at Bonneville that wasn’t cancelled due to a lack of salt during a three-year period from 2013 to 2015. More

It was a huge honor to receive this trophy yesterday at the MPG banquet in the Marconi Museum of Orange County for my Road Scholars Magazine article “Searching For Salt”.

Thanks to everyone at RS Magazine: especially editor Randy Leffingwell, Cam Ingram, and Kevin Watts. Thanks also to the Speed Week folks at Bonneville Salt Flats, Save the Salt Coalition, 1975 Porsche 911 streamliner owner Tom Woodford, and Andrea Wells.

BONNEVILLE SPEEDWAY IN 2016?

Will Speed Week happen on August 13-19? How about the World Finals scheduled for September 27-30?

Two months ago the Utah House Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Environment Committee unanimously passed a resolution urging the federal government to take immediate action to restore the Bonneville Salt Flats. More

WINTER APPROACHES

December 22 is just a month a way. For those of you who live in environs that get roads salted, be sure and give your classic car(s) some exercise before they are put away for the season. I spent yesterday driving mine and it was a blast!

LOOKING FORWARD

2015 is sure to be an interesting year. The Porsche community has a lot to look forward to with Rennsport Reunion V scheduled for the fall in Monterey. Held every four years, it is a must see event for any car enthusiast. I will be producing a documentary film on Roger Grago to debut there, and I’ll be revisiting Speed Week at the Bonneville Salt Flats for a future book. There are some amazing editorial stories to come as well – Pre-A 356s, early 911 racing cars, an iconic 914-6, and many others.

Plus, my “Steinbeck’s America” book will be printed for the general public to enjoy.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

PERSONAL WORK – 2014

Each December/January I post a personal work series – what I consider my best three images from a non-assignment single location during the year. It is an entirely subjective process, unlike my edited commercial work. Last year I posted three low key photos captured within a few days in Cabo San Lucas.

This year’s high key images were all shot with a Canon 50mm lens during two days in September on the Bonneville Salt Flats.

AS SUMMER ENDS

It’s been a great year. Unfortunately, Speed Week at Bonneville was cancelled (again). Weather is one thing you cannot control. Thankfully I was able to photograph the World of Speed event at the salt flats as well as the Pikes Peak Hill Climb earlier in 2014. Here are some non-assignment images I can share. More

WORLD OF SPEED 2014

Tom Woodford is bringing a a heavily modified 1975 Porsche 911 to the the Bonneville Salt Flats today to break the 200 mph mark. How will he do it? Add hp (3L water-to-air intercooled Turbo). Oh, and add big wings and a parachute to slow down. Tom’s ride is sponsored by Elephant Racing, which did the suspension work, and Factory Tour Parts. I’ll be there to photograph it for Excellence magazine!
