KINGMAN, ARIZONA

Sometimes the unexpected turns out to be the best thing that could happen. Recently I stepped out of my hotel room with a camera for a look at the sunset. There across the street was a gathering of American hot rods at a local drive-in. The 50mm f1.4 lens I had with me was perfect for the evening light, and I went to work. What a magical moment. FROM PIKES PEAK TO BONNEVILLE SALT FLATS

Just back from photographing a Pike’s Peak Hill Climb test day courtesy of Road Scholars, “The Fred” Veitch, and Jeff Zwart. From Colorado Springs I drove to Wendover, Utah to visit the famous Bonneville Salt Flats. Here are two pics from that travel.

Sea level to 14,000 feet to 4,000 feet. What a trip! If you haven’t been to these “bucket list” U.S. races, now’s your chance. America’s 2014’s Pikes Peak Internation Hill Climb is happening June 29th, and Bonneville Speed Week will take place August 9-15. Continue reading “”

THE TUXEDO CAR

Congratulations to Stephen Norman and his 1938 BMW 327 Cabriolet for being featured in Bimmer Magazine this month (issue 123). The beautiful pre-War BMW saloon car was chosen for the illustrious field at Pebble Beach in 2013 and is a study in elegance. Thanks to Jackie Jouret for assigning me to write and photograph this story. Continue reading “”

The article written by Rob focuses on the six most important driving lessons as taught by ProFormance Racing School at Pacific Raceways in Washington. Hanging out with everyone was a hoot! SETTING THE PACE

Thanks to Aaron Jenkins, Walter Gerber, Michael Collins and John Goodman for their collaboration in producing a story for Forza Magazine using my text and photos. The featured Goodman owned Ferrari/I.DE.A. Mondial-t is a one-off pace-car commissioned by PPG Industries for the CART/PPG Indy Car World Series in the late ’80s. What a hoot it was to drive with that livery and all those safety lights onboard! Continue reading “”

IS THERE LIFE AFTER RACING?

“Racing is life. Everything that happens before or after is just waiting.” Did a race car driver ever speak truer words?

Judging by the reverence with which Steve McQueen’s line from the movie Le Mans is held, I’d say not. Yet, for some racers there is more to “Life After Racing”… like long-time PCA member Richard Sutliffe. Continue reading “”

“RUSH” PREMIERES

Had a chance to see Ron Howard’s “Rush” in a movie theatre last night and came away very impressed. It portrays the Formula 1 racing rivalry between Austrian Niki Lauda and Brit James Hunt leading to the climactic 1976 Driver’s Championship. Unlike previous motorsports films, it has an absolutely compelling story line and believable character development. It is also wonderfully cinematic in scope with great attention to period-correct details. Continue reading “”
