NEVER BE SWALLOWED BY THE CRACKS
David & David was a mid-80s L.A. band that put out one album, Boomtown. It happened to be great. Here’s a catchy pop tune they composed that was arguably as good as anything done at the time. Continue reading “”

THE BUCKET LIST
The other night I watched Rob Reiner’s wonderful film starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. Some of my favorites. With parents getting older (and all of us too), the thematic underpinnings struck home. Hard.
I LOVE FALL
Testing some lenses today and was surprised by the results. Here’s a snap I took with a 1970 Leica 21mm Super Angulon rangefinder lens on a 2012 Leica M9-P camera body from my back door.
There is something special about this vintage optic and Leica’s older Summilux, Summicron, and Summaron lenses. Compared to modern Leica aspherical lenses, they can create a more three dimensional quality and a natural vignetting without correction right out of the camera. Plenty sharp and less post-production! Continue reading “”
IT’S NOT SOME MYSTERIOUS WISH THAT WE’RE IGNORING
Paraphrasing one of the brilliant lines from the TV series “Mad Men”… For those who are not familiar, this show is set in the advertising world of Manhattan in the 1960s. Continue reading “”
“RUSH” PREMIERES
Had a chance to see Ron Howard’s “Rush” in a movie theatre last night and came away very impressed. It portrays the Formula 1 racing rivalry between Austrian Niki Lauda and Brit James Hunt leading to the climactic 1976 Driver’s Championship. Unlike previous motorsports films, it has an absolutely compelling story line and believable character development. It is also wonderfully cinematic in scope with great attention to period-correct details. Continue reading “”
AMERICA’S CUP – SAN FRANCISCO DREAMING
Here’s a post for my sailing buddies. Being a Hobie 14 owner, it’s exciting for me to see these high-tech catamarans fly a hull at 25+ knots. Continue reading “”

I DON’T KNOW (AND THAT’S A GOOD THING)
Rolling Stone bomber cover? Zimmerman made-for-TV trial? Royal baby? Uhhh… OK.
Detroit going bankrupt? Now there’s a real story. While the Dow reaches record highs, people in Michigan are living out of dumpsters. What a disgrace…
PORSCHE 991 GT3 WITH CHRIS HARRIS
Here’s the latest video that’s circling Porschedom. Chris Harris produced this short on the just released and extremely capable PDK-only GT3. You can read more about this somewhat controversial new Porsche in the May issue of Panorama magazine. Continue reading “”
OUT OF AFRICA
100 years ago Karen Blixen asked her lover’s brother to marry her and travel from Denmark to Kenya to start a farm. Seventy years later Sydney Pollack made a film about the story starring Robert Redford (who played Denys George Finch Hatton) and Merryl Streep (who played Baroness Karen Blixen).
Critic Roger Ebert described the resulting 1985 Acadamy award-winning film this way, “Out of Africa is a great movie to look at, breathtakingly filmed on location. It is a movie with the courage to be about complex, sweeping emotions, and to use the star power of its actors without apology.†I agree. Continue reading “”

FEAST OF FRIENDS
I’m lucky to have Bob Tilton as a friend, along with all my other early Porsche chums. Here’s a photo he posted recently from the 2011 Rennsport Reunion IV in Monterey. Bob was there making some amazing images, and happened to choose me as a subject. For more on his photgraphy and lfe experiences, please see his WerkCrew blog, plus a cool video with a couple of Tilton blog images: Continue reading “”
PORSCHE 911: 50 YEARS AGO – NEXT STEP
By this time in 1963, Butzi Porsche’s design/styling studio team had developed models for the 901 coupe. Erwin Komenda contributed much inspration. In this team worked Heinrich Klie, Gerhard Schröder, Ernst Bolt, Heinz Unger, and Graf Goertz.
Who knew it would be the preferred sports car for rock stars like David Crosby, Jim Morrison, and George Harrison? Continue reading “”

2013 PORSCHE CAYMAN THRASHED
Here’s my pick for car test video of the year. Chris Harris even outdoes himself on this one. Being candid about a car’s shortcomings and transparent about it’s strengths, is not easy for any journalist. He does it here. Continue reading “”
