IS THERE LIFE AFTER RACING?

“Racing is life. Everything that happens before or after is just waiting.” Did a race car driver ever speak truer words?

Judging by the reverence with which Steve McQueen’s line from the movie Le Mans is held, I’d say not. Yet, for some racers there is more to “Life After Racing”… like long-time PCA member Richard Sutliffe. Continue reading “”

ROAD SCHOLARS

Congratulations to Cam Ingram, Kevin Watts and everyone at Road Scholars for a banner year in rare collectible car restoration, awards, and sales. And, as always, thanks to Porsche specialist Chris Powell for his support and contributions to my images of the Road Scholars west coast inventory. Their website is a great showcase for my photography. Continue reading “”

PORSCHE 911: 50 YEARS AGO – UNVEILED TO THE PUBLIC

At the Frankfurt Auto Show in September 1963 sat a prim-rose-colored coupe with seat centers trimmed in checked cloth. It was called the Porsche 901, a model that would later become the 911 after Peugot objected to the use of “0” as a middle digit. Thus the iconic 911 was born. Continue reading “”

EARLY 911S AND VINYL ARE HOT!

How did I happen to pick two passions 20 years ago that would become so popular today? I don’t know, but the modest acquisitions I made a decade or so ago have grown into a good chunk of my financial portfolio.

The important thing to me is that I use each as they were intended. I play my original ’60s first pressing UK vinyl on my turntable and drive my Porsche 1972 911S and 911T/ST enthusiastically on a regular basis. Those hobbies, my work and good health are all I could ask for. Of course, my wife is my greatest blessing – can’t put a number on that! Continue reading “”

FINDING TRUE VALUE IN A GT SPEEDSTER

I feel very fortunate to be a contributor for several automotive magazines. One benefit is working with great editors and car owners. Pete Stout and Greg Young are two who fit that descrption. I’ve come to know them, and they have enhanced my writing, photography and life. Congrats, guys, on your latest achievements.

CARRERA PANAMERICANA IN A PORSCHE 911

Excellence magazine has done it again in issue #213. They’ve profiled a Porsche owner who is a true enthusiast and racer. He is Walt Sikes, a competitor who chose the early 911 as his weapon of choice. Check out his pair of 1965 build 911s.

Here’s an excerpt from my article (Thanks Greg Brown and John Kirikos!): Continue reading “”

CONGRATS TO “JP” PHILLIPS

The current issue of PCA North America’s Panorama magazine (July 2013) includes my article and photos featuring J.P. Phillips’ very unusual Porsche. It started life as one of five 1998 Cabriolet 993s, the only one painted Arena Red Metallic, and ended up as a special build that UK’s Ninemeister calls a ‘9m93 Speedster S’.

TLG AUTO

It’s good to be home after a busy May. A California road trip in my 1972 911 with friends was a great adventure. The early 911 Porsche club, R Gruppe, held a fantastic gathering near the central coast where some of the best driving is. Marco and Tony Gerace of TLG Auto in North Hollywood were there to help me get to a track day at Willow Springs when my car developed a small transmission leak. Those guys are the best. Look for my feature on Tony and his car soon in Excellence Magazine! Continue reading “”

THE RUBBER BUMPER 911 BOUNCES BACK

Congrats to Nathan Cocozza and his 1974 U.S. Carrera for their feature in this months Panorama Porsche magazine. It was fun to write about and photograph this rubber bumpered “mid-year” 911. (Yes, it’s Olive colored in the original photos).

Despite long held beliefs to the contrary, the 1974 Carrera can almost be seen as a separate model. It’s a unique transition between the ‘73 and ‘75 types and is no longer underappreciated. Today it’s considered not only desirable to own but also a lot of fun to drive. Continue reading “”

HURLEY HAYWOOD REUNITES WITH HIS 1973 SEBRING WINNING PORSCHE 911 RSR

Hurley Haywood is reunited with his ’73 Porsche RSR on the 40th Anniversary of his first 12 Hours of Sebring win. Haywood, considered the world’s most successful endurance driver, discusses what makes this race so special, his back-to-back endurance wins at Daytona and Sebring, and what a difference forty years can make to the racing scene. FEAST OF FRIENDS

I’m lucky to have Bob Tilton as a friend, along with all my other early Porsche chums. Here’s a photo he posted recently from the 2011 Rennsport Reunion IV in Monterey. Bob was there making some amazing images, and happened to choose me as a subject. For more on his photgraphy and lfe experiences, please see his WerkCrew blog, plus a cool video with a couple of Tilton blog images: Continue reading “”

PORSCHE 911: 50 YEARS AGO – NEXT STEP

By this time in 1963, Butzi Porsche’s design/styling studio team had developed models for the 901 coupe. Erwin Komenda contributed much inspration. In this team worked Heinrich Klie, Gerhard Schröder, Ernst Bolt, Heinz Unger, and Graf Goertz.

Who knew it would be the preferred sports car for rock stars like David Crosby, Jim Morrison, and George Harrison? Continue reading “”

WHAT’S ANOTHER 50 BUCKS?

Is a modified 1989-1994 964 really the ‘90s R Gruppe 911? All the Internet chat on these last of the classic shaped Porsches might actually have you believing it. Driving one would probably seal the deal. Well, having done so, I’m pretty sure Geoff Newman’s 1993 RS America 911 hot rod would do the convincing. Continue reading “”
