THE STORY BEHIND THE SHOT
This month we look at an image of mine that’s from the very first magazine feature ever done on John Straub’s old 1967 911. I titled it “Rust Never Sleeps”, and it appeared in the November 2011 issue of Excellence Magazine. Continue reading “”

Two views shot first thing in the morning this month. I feel very fortunate to have these landscapes and weather conditions available to me. Now it’s off to California for another environment to photograph! Continue reading “”

THROWBACK THURSDAY
Can’t afford a new digital Leica SL with 50mm lens? There’s always the all analog Leicaflex SL from the early ’70s. It was made from 1968 to 1974, with 1080 being capable of being motorized (SLMOT). Here’s my first Leica camera, bought used in 1979. Hey, if it was good enough gear for Ernst Haas… Continue reading “”
HAPPY VALENTINES DAY
I love this day, not only because of my wonderful wife, but also because it gives me an excuse to post a flower photo. Continue reading “”
THE NEGATIVE BEHIND THE SHOT – BRESSON
Thanks to the website Leicaphilia for posting this shot of Henri Cartier-Bresson’s negative and portrait of the “decisive moment” he made so famous in still photography over 80 years ago. Continue reading “”
THE STORY BEHIND THE SHOT
On the first of every month I’ll be posting about a photograph I made.
This month we look at an image I created in 2010. It’s an Aga Blue 1973 911E parked in front of some old quonset huts in Orange County. The car’s owner and I scouted this unusual set of buildings and arrived at dawn the next day. Continue reading “”
1972 CUSTOM PORSCHE 911
Not quite a Singer restoration but it has ST bodywork, 315 hp and weighs 2350 pounds. Published in three international magazines. Yes, it’s fast and it’s paid for! Continue reading “”
NO ALTERNATIVE FACTS HERE
As a photojournalist, I have to get the facts right. When, for whatever reason, I cannot, then the piece I may have already spent a week on remains unpublished. That’s just the way it is. There is no alternative reality allowable in my profession. Not if one wants to keep their integrity intact. Continue reading “”
THROWBACK THURSDAY
Winter is a great time to do some tabletop studio work. On the third Thursday of each month, I’ll be posting a new still photograph of one of my old film cameras. Call it a retro phase.
Leica’s M4-2 was a short-lived model built from 1978 to 1980. It was a simplified revision of the M4 (’66-’75). It didn’t have a self timer, but it had a working hot shoe and could take a winder. About 16,000 were made, including mine shown here. Bought in 1979, it was my first Leica rangefinder. Continue reading “”
OUT OF AFRICA
Another historic Porsche has been featured in the January issue of PCA Panorama Magazine. It’s the 1973 911 Carrera RS that finished 2nd in the 1974 African Safari Rally with Björn WaldegÃ¥rd at the wheel. Continue reading “”
SEARCHING FOR SALT – ONE YEAR LATER
Thanks to my friends at Road Scholars for publishing an update to my October 2015 award-winning article.
It tells the story of Porsche competitor Tom Woodford, who attended the 2014 Bonneville Salt Flats “World of Speed†event. It was the only automotive competition at Bonneville that wasn’t cancelled due to a lack of salt during a three-year period from 2013 to 2015. Continue reading “”
PERSONAL WORK – 2016
2016 was a very creative year for me, and 2017 is not letting up. Here are some images of mine shot in Los Cabos, Mexico last year with a Leica M9-P and 50mm Summicron.
WANT TO UPGRADE YOUR EARLY 911 SUSPENSION?
Porsche’s first 911 sport cars in stock form ride a bit soft by today’s standards. Their shocks and bushings are easily worn out over time. My latest Road Scholars Magazine article covers the basics of maintaining and subtly upgrading the ride of your early 911, while improving its handling. Enjoy! Continue reading “”
