THE PRANCING CLYDESDALE
Thanks to Aaron Jenkins and David Seibert for their collaboration in producing this story for Forza Magazine. The John Goodman owned Ferrari 308 GTB race car sponsored by Budweiser and driven by actor Paul Newman was a blast to shoot! Continue reading “”
JUST BACK FROM TWO WEEKS IN CALIFORNIA
Thanks to everyone I saw on this special trip. Photographed five Porsches for future articles, met with three of my editors, and chatted briefly with Prescott Kelly, Jerry Seinfeld and Chad McQueen. Special thanks go to Curt Autenreith, Cris Huergas, Terry English, Scott Longballa, and Rod & Gary Emory for their valued companionship. Continue reading “”
GET AWAY IN MARCH?
Here’s my pick for this year. Caribbean or Hawaii, depending on where you live. My fave island in the West Indies is St. Barts. Second, if you want more variety, would be St. Martin. Both will provide French cuisine and beautiful white sandy beaches. For Hawaii, my choice is Kauai. It’s off the beaten path, especially Hanalei Bay, and offers lots of exciting possibilities like aerial photographs of Na Pali at sunset. Continue reading “”
2013 PORSCHE CAYMAN THRASHED
Here’s my pick for car test video of the year. Chris Harris even outdoes himself on this one. Being candid about a car’s shortcomings and transparent about it’s strengths, is not easy for any journalist. He does it here. Continue reading “”
THANK YOU TO PETE STOUT AND PANORAMA
There have been a few times in my career as a photographer where a publication has used my images in exactly the way I would have layed them out. This is one of those times. The February issue of the Porsche Club of America’s magazine Panorama just arrived and I’m over the moon. Both of the features I was involved in look amazing. One documents a remarkable 32,800 mile all original ’58 Speedster and the other portrays a newly restored 1972 911 in ST Signal Yellow paint. Continue reading “”
12 HOURS TO PLEASE ME
It’s the 50th anniversary of The Beatles Please Please Me album recording session at Abbey Road studio. On Monday, February 11th 1963, the Beatles (John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr) made their debut record in just 12 hours. Continue reading “”
THE 356 THAT KEEPS ON GIVING
Once again, Excellence magazine has chosen to feature a “patina queen.” This one is an original 356B Porsche in Ruby Red driven by Rachel Nelson of California on a daily basis. With 285,000 miles on the clock, it’s still ticking and delivering the goods. Rachel’s custom glass goes in the back seat when she delivers small pieces to clients! Continue reading “”
ADVERTISING AT ITS BEST?
Whether you think it was the best or worst Super Bowl ad, there’s no denying the beautiful still photographs chosen by The Richards Group for the Dodge Ram spot “So God Made A Farmer” as narrated by Paul Harvey. Continue reading “”
PINK MOON REISSUE BOX SET
Here’s my vote for 2012’s top reissued piece of vinyl.
The newly released box set LP of Nick Drake’s phenomenal 1972 album, Pink Moon, was done right. Mastered with care from the original master tapes, EQd all analog, 180g record pressed at the highly regarded German Optimal plant with excellent quality control (my copy is flat and quiet), and presented in custom packaging that only adds to the experience. PORSCHE 911: 50 YEARS AGO – BEGINNINGS
At this time 50 years ago, plans were well underway at Porsche to build a replacement for the 356 sports car. The Porsche family, Helmuth Bott, and Hans Mezger were plenty busy in Stuttgart as decisions were being made as to the car’s shape, engine and suspension. Continue reading “”
FOR EVERYMAN
I’m a believer in the power of collective consciousness. When I played Jackson Browne’s For Everyman the other night I was reminded of this. Released in 1973 to little fanfare, Browne’s second album made the top 50. I’ve been listening to it ever since. Continue reading “”
NEW SINGER 911 VIDEO
Chris Harris and Drive have just released a great video documenting Rob Dickinson’s Singer 911. It’s wonderful to see someone who has the vision and budget to produce a “bespoke” custom Porsche that has no compromises. Of course Rothsport’s slide valve injection might be even cooler, but this car is seriously “horny” as Chris says. Continue reading “”
REMEMBERING SUMMER
Whenever the sun disappears for two months at a time, when the rain comes down in buckets or the temperature drops below freezing, my mind drifts back to nicer days. Last summer in the Pacific Northwest saw plenty of those, and some great track days!
Here’s a short video of one perfect day. A retro-mod Porsche 911, a GoPro camera, and a brand new set of 225-50/16 Dunlop street tires. To paraphrase Kilgore/Milius: “I love the smell of burning rubber in the morning. It smells like… Victory.” Continue reading “”
PLEASE PLEASE ME
Fifty years ago the single “Please Please Me” was released in the U.K. The Beatles B-side was originally “Ask Me Why” but later switched to “From Me To You” on the U.S. release. Composed by John Lennon, with help from producer George Martin, PPM went on to become the group’s first #1 hit. Their first 7″ record, “Love Me Do / P.S. I Love You” (with Andy White on drums), failed to top the charts due to lack of promotion as The Beatles were still playing in Hamburg, Germany. Continue reading “”
