ROME

Folks often ask me, “What’s your favorite city to visit in Europe?” Since spring is here and Paris can be quite lovely this time of year, especially in May, they are usually surprised when I choose another major popular tourist destination. London? Well, I love the capital city and could walk around it for days, but I’d wait until July/August to have the best chance of good weather. September can be even better if you want to avoid the crowds.

Amanda Knox’s initial verdict aside, Italy is my country to see if you haven’t already. Venice? I would go during carnival in February. In the final analysis, Rome would be my #1 pick. Any time of year is nice since it has a Mediterranean climate, but summer can be hot and muggy (meaning you could easily be mugged!). The best months are April/May and September/October.

Rome has more architectural and cultural treasures than anywhere else I’ve been. Ancient monuments, medieval heritage, renaissance, baroque, neoclassicism – this city has it all. If you don’t see the style you are looking for, walk around the corner in Rome and you will probably find it.

It’s an amazing place for photographers and the archeologically curious. Plus there are numerous parks, gardens, fountains, aqueducts, statues, bridges, and the Vatican city. When you add in the charm of its unique traditions, the interesting people, the great food, the beauty of its panoramic views, and the majesty of its magnificent art – well, I would love to see it all again.

Update 10/3/11: Now that Amanda Cox has finally been acquitted, perhaps I will return to Italy without fear for my freedom.
