ALL-AMERICAN ROADS

When America’s best scenic drives are discussed, a few always make the list. US Hwy 1 on the Pacific Coast is an obvious choice, as is Going-to-the-Sun Road in Montana. As amazing as these roads are, over 20 more are considered “All-American Roads” (see below), and one in particular stands out above all the rest as being both uniquely uncrowded and spectacular.

The Beartooth Highway is a mountain road so incredible that the late Charles Kuralt called it “the most beautiful drive in America.” Leaving from Yellowstone National Park, US Highway 212 begins to climb east of Cooke City, Montana at 7,500 ft then traces a series of switchbacks along the Montana-Wyoming border passing several isolated alpine lakes before reaching the 10,947 ft high Beartooth Pass in the Absaroke Mountain Range. The 4,500 ft descent to Red Lodge, Montana is just as breathtaking with steep dropoffs and fantastic views.

Be sure and fill up with gas before talking this 68 mile trip. Also be sure to bring your jacket, water and camera, and check beforehand for road closures. It has been known to be snowed in during the middle of summer!
