AS SUMMER ENDS
It’s been a great year. Unfortunately, Speed Week at Bonneville was cancelled (again). Weather is one thing you cannot control. Thankfully I was able to photograph the World of Speed event at the salt flats as well as the Pikes Peak Hill Climb earlier in 2014. Here are some non-assignment images I can share. 2014 PCA PARADE COVERAGE
I had a great time in Monterey this summer, and the photos I made are now being published. Look for them in the September issue of PCA’s national Panorama Magazine. Along with a Porsche 959 cover image and photos of the record-breaking 2014 Porsche Parade, there’s a 2010 Cayman story I provided visuals for. This amazing car has a GT3 motor that owner Steve Lau and writer Pete von Behrens drove to top time of the day at the annual autocross. Continue reading “”
THE BEATLES IN MONO VINYL BOX DONE RIGHT
Apparently all the complaints from last year about The Beatles stereo LP box pressings got through to EMI. Optimal and analog tapes were enlisted for this new Mono box. Even Michael Fremer (and a respected mastering engineer) are saying good things about it on Analog Planet. I’m buying this John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr set on wax… Yeah, I’m a Beatles completist. Continue reading “”
PCA PNWR SPIEL COVER
September’s issue of the “Spiel” is out… Thanks to editor David Cook and art director Dean Holbrook, and all the officers of the Porsche Club of America PNW region. My cover photograph depicts a fleeting moment at sunset when waves were crashing against the idyllic California coast with a beautiful Porsche in the foreground. Continue reading “”
WORLD OF SPEED 2014
Tom Woodford is bringing a a heavily modified 1975 Porsche 911 to the the Bonneville Salt Flats today to break the 200 mph mark. How will he do it? Add hp (3L water-to-air intercooled Turbo). Oh, and add big wings and a parachute to slow down. Continue reading “”
BACK FROM CALIFORNIA, THEN OFF AGAIN
Life is like a box of Cracker Jacks. You never know what you’re going to get. Fortunately, I’ve been getting some very good stuff lately. Call it a creative phase. Whatever it is, I’ll take it. Continue reading “”
MORE CALIFORNIA PORSCHE GOODNESS
The Werks Reunion in Monterey last Friday was an awesome event. Over 500 Porsches lined the green fields of Carmel Valley. On hand were several unique models from Road Scholars’ collection, R Gruppe club, and PCA. Continue reading “”
AFFAIR OF THE HEART
Congratulations to Rick Bradley and the California Porsche 356 convertible he bought new in 1960. Here’s what Rick says about his lifelong ride in my article in this month’s issue of Panorama Magazine, Continue reading “”
CARS YEAH INTERVIEW PODCAST
Cars Yeah is an innovative website that features podcast interviews with automotive entrepreneurs. Mark Greene asked me to participate, and our session will go live tomorrow.
PORSCHE MEET
Rain showers could not keep over 200 Porsches away from gathering at the Redmond Town Center in Washington state today. From 356s to a Carrera GT, the marque was well represented at the largest Porsche meet north of California. We just needed ignore the volunteer organizer’s attitude…
LOST ORIENTATION
“Some social philosophers (Bauman, Sloterdijk) focus attention to the fact that in modern society the continuous state of change has its toll. The fickle character of this age implies that individuals lose their sense of orientation. While improvising his way through the manifold changes modern man loses every sense of direction.” Continue reading “”
KINGMAN, ARIZONA
Sometimes the unexpected turns out to be the best thing that could happen. Recently I stepped out of my hotel room with a camera for a look at the sunset. There across the street was a gathering of American hot rods at a local drive-in. The 50mm f1.4 lens I had with me was perfect for the evening light, and I went to work. What a magical moment. JAY MAISEL
Here are a few words of advice from Jay Maisel, a master color photographer with tremendous experience and wisdom:
“If you are not your own severest critic, you’re your own worst enemy. It is so much easier to take pictures if you have the camera with you. Go out empty – to have the real joy of not having something to shoot, to just be free. That’s what motivates me. The chance to look at something – and see something new.” Continue reading “”
NEW LED ZEPPELIN VINYL REISSUES
The long awaited Led Zep LPs are on record store shelves sealed in cellophane or spinning on young listeners USB turntables now.
The up side is they’re not scratchy or noisy, the down side is they don’t sound as good as originals or the Classic vinyl reissues from a few years ago. Continue reading “”
