TARGA CALIFORNIA
The 2nd Annual Targa California Rally took place this past week south of Monterey. Over fifty pre-1975 cars (twenty of which were Porsches) drove 1,000 miles over varied terrain during the peak of this spring’s wildflower season. R.I.P. JIM MARSHALL
A witness to ’60’s rock history and one of the greatest Leica M photojournalists, Jim Marshall passed away in New York City yesterday. He was 74. His photographs of Jimi Hendrix at Monterey, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin, and The Beatles’ last concert in San Francisco in 1966 are legendary. He was well known for capturing decisive musical moments and was the chief photographer at the original Woodstock festival. A strong personality with a solid business sense and great stories to tell, his is a dying breed in still photography. He may well be the end of an era. Continue reading “”

I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to live a life that has allowed me to pursue my passion. Photography, words and music are an integral part of my core being. LEICA’S NEW S2
I’ve been a fan of Leica cameras since I bought a used Leicaflex SL back in 1979. Since then I’ve come to value their mechanical precision, durability and astounding image contrast and shadow quality. M2s, M3s, M4s, M6s, Leicaflexes, R4s, R6s and R8s have passed through my hands over the years.
With each succeeding model, the innovations have impressed just as much as the consistent “look†provided by the superb German optics. Leica has just introduced a brand new Leica S-system that combines 35mm handling with a medium format digital sensor. HOUSTON’S FOTOFEST
Next month I’ll be traveling to one of my favorite big cities: Houston, Texas. The purpose of my visit is to promote my forthcoming book, Imagine A Nation: In Search of America. I’ll be meeting with publishers and gallery owners in preparation for 2012, my hoped for publication date. The venue is the famous FotoFest, a biennial photographic community gathering which this year features contemporary U.S. photography. I’m really excited by all the possibilities that lay in store and the people I will be meeting. In my spare time I’ll be sure and take in some ribs and architectural photography!
DAVE ECK’S GT BADGED PORSCHE
The current news stand issue of Excellence, the magazine about Porsche, contains one of my articles on the classic 1972 911 sports car. This particular white coupe was transformed from an ‘80’s Miami Vice bling machine into a sleeper of an award winning hot rod by Californian Dave Eck and his host of friends.
The great part about this car is that you could conceivably walk right past it without a second look. It doesn’t have any racing stripes or body decals. Heck, it doesn’t even have big fog lamps mounted on the hood. Instead it features vintage looking later model wheels and a plain old gas tank. Continue reading “”

HELLO AND WELCOME TO MY BLOG
I’m starting the New Year in 2010 with this commentary site, which reflects my personal areas of interest and how I view the temporal quality of life. My goal is to post something at least once a week on one of my four major passions: Photography/Video, Classic Porsches, Travel, and Music.
Hopefully I’ll provide a useful perspective on how each of these pursuits can be experienced with more than one unique sensory experience. I plan to review on average one photo tip, one sports car article/video, one journey, and one music album every month.

I MADE THIS PHOTOGRAPH OVER 40 YEARS AGO
Hard to believe today, but this was my subject in New Zealand in the spring of 1980. A boy in a worn Superman t-shirt sitting in front of a corner store on the south island of New Zealand. I remember I had a 24mm f/1.4 lens on my Canon F-1 with Kodachrome 25 film. Seems just like yesterday with my buddy who’s celebrating his birthday this week … wish I was there now.
KEEPING IT FRESH
Here’s some good advice for the jaded photographer I came across:
“If your images have become predictable to you, they likely feel predictable to others too. Curiosity isn’t just about experimenting; it’s about maintaining a genuine interest in exploring the unknown within your craft. Nostalgia can become a trap, too. (Mr.) Chakyat shares his own occasional struggles with relying too much on past successes to justify current complacency. His advice is clear: reflect on your achievements, but don’t let them excuse your lack of present ambition.
