PORSCHE’S FIRST OVERALL VICTORY AT LE MANS & HANS MEZGER

The 1970 running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans took place 50 years ago on June 13 and 14. Porsche had won first in class before, but their 1970 victory was their first overall Le Mans win.

They would go on to conquer the event more times than any other manufacturer. The late Hans Mezger was instrumental in that first victory and many others.

R.I.P. Hans Mezger, age 90, who passed away today. Hans was one of the most important engine designers ever. His first project was to work on the valve train of the Luhrmann-Designed 356 Carrera engine for Porsche – not an easy task. Over the next 35 years, he took part in the design of the first Porsche 911 engine, the Porsche turbocharged engines, and became the leader of the famed Porsche Race Engine Department. HIGHER THAN THE WORLD

Van Morrison has reached more heights than any songwriter I’ve known since his debut in 1963. Perhaps no song has touched me more than the lead track of his 1983 album Inarticulate Speech of Heart. It’s his most underrated album and a hymn that has probably saved my life. Continue reading “”

THIS IS THE MEMORIAL DAY I’M TRYING TO FORGET

On May 22, National Road Trip Day, I decided to drive around the neighborhood, picking up some groceries and the mail. I also added a hundred new road trip images to the website, once i got home – while praying for better days ahead.

Hopefully, this pandemic is peaking and will begin to pass. Still, it has made existing problems all the more apparent. The incompetence and sheer selfishness exhibited by many has made the nation that our veterans sacrificed their lives for look pathetic. On the flip side, what happens next could serve as a once-in-a-multi-generational chance to build a better future. Continue reading “”

THE FUJI G617 FILM CAMERA

This is one of only two medium format cameras that I’ve kept from the film days. The other is a Hasselblad 500C. They both remain relevant for making large prints. Wth the roll film tha’s still available today.

The Fuji G617 is a large yet lightweight photographic machine that produces amazing panoramic images captured at 6cm x 17cm in size. That’s plenty big to print huge murals if you want. All manual, no light meter. Make sure you get the special ND filter. Continue reading “”

PLAYING RECORDS IS A GREAT WAY TO DE-STRESS

With Record Store Day 2020 postponed due to the pandemic, now’s a good time to listen to some great sounding vinyl. It’s a sublime way to pass the time while at home.

Live albums can be especially beneficial in bringing back fond memories of concerts you may have attended. Or you can spin some female vocals or mellow jazz for a relaxing break from the computer. Vinyl remains my preferred way to listen to music for its ability to let me connect with the artist in an emotional way. Continue reading “”

LONELY PLANET

It seems that every day there is big news breaking. On a smaller scale, Lonely Planet Publications is shutting down its production offices and eliminating its travel magazine and non-guidebook titles.

I was fortunate to have many travel photographs published in their books over the years. Here’s a Seattle cover of mine made on slide film before Photoshop. Continue reading “”
